Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, was awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year award on February 6, 2023. The award is given annually to an NFL player who demonstrates excellence both on and off the field. In his acceptance speech, Dak honored his mother, Peggy Prescott, and shared the story of how she inspired him to be the person he is today.
"Love you, Mama," were the first words Dak spoke as he took the stage to accept the award. "She's always been my why," he continued. "She's always been my rock, my support system, and my motivation to be better every day."
Dak then shared the story of how his mother raised him and his brothers as a single mother, working multiple jobs to provide for their family. Despite the struggles she faced, Peggy never let her children see her struggle, and always made sure they felt loved and supported.
"Growing up in such a tough environment, I learned at a young age the importance of perseverance and determination," Dak said. "My mother instilled those values in me, and they've become a part of who I am today. I carry them with me onto the field, and I bring them with me into my community."
Dak also spoke about his work with the Dak Prescott Foundation, which was founded in honor of his late brother, Jace, who passed away from suicide. The foundation's mission is to provide hope, support, and resources to those struggling with mental health issues.
"My brother's passing was one of the hardest things my family and I have ever had to go through," Dak said. "But I know that he would want me to use my platform to bring awareness to this important issue, and to help others who are struggling."
The quarterback also spoke about his work with various other charitable organizations, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the United Way. Through his charitable work, Dak has made a positive impact on the lives of countless people, and he remains committed to giving back to his community.
"I know that my mother would be proud of the man I've become," Dak said in conclusion. "And I hope that through my work, I can honor her memory and continue to make a positive difference in the world."
Dak's speech was met with a standing ovation from the audience, and his words continue to inspire people around the world. The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is a testament to Dak's character,
